Shinjiko Lake & Hotspring - Shimane Art Museum

The first thing you'll notice about Shimane's impressive Prefectural Art Museum is it's striking architecture, featuring glass walls with large cutouts in the sloping roof to admit light. Located on the eastern shore of Lake Shinji, the building is meant to harmonize with the water, and the museum often organizes exhibitions based around water themes.
Opened a decade ago, the museum boasts a surprisingly good collection with works by European masters such as Monet and Rodin displayed alongside Japanese pieces both historic and contemporary. Among the best of these are woodblock prints by the master Utagawa Hiroshige. For many visitors, though, the primary appeal of the museum is the wonderful view of Lake Shinji, especially beautiful at the close of day as the sun sets on the far shore.
